Funding for your school
Access funding for your school travel plan
Once your first school travel plan has been approved, your school will receive a special capital grant from the DCSF. After that, if you have actions in your school travel plan that need a little extra funding then through Richmond Council you can access a small grants fund.
You can also access funding for supply cover to release staff time to work on the travel plan, its actions or monitoring the results.
DCSF capital grant
Once your school travel plan has been approved as meeting the criteria set out by DCSF your school will receive a one off capital grant. The grant is worked out by pupils numbers (so the bigger your school the more funding you receive) with primary schools receiving £3750 and secondary and special schools receiving £5000 plus £5 per pupil on role. This typically equates to £5000 for a primary school and £10000 for a secondary school.
This capital funding should be spent on implementing actions within your travel plan such as wet weather waiting areas, entrance improvements or cycle storage. For more information on what this funding can and cannot be used for download this quick guide.
Note: Independent schools are not eligible to receive this grant from the DCSF but independent schools in Richmond who complete an approved school travel plan will receive an identical grant from the Council (this grant is provided through Transport for London funding).
Small grants fund
Richmond school travel team has some funding each year to support schools in making their school travel plans happen. To be eligible to apply your school must have an approved school travel plan and have carried out annual reviews if the plan is more than one year old.
Further details on the amounts of funding available and deadlines for applying are available from the Richmond school travel advisor.
Supply cover funding
Schools are busy places and finding the time to develop a travel plan and then to put it into action can be difficult. To help schools in freeing up some time for staff working on sustainable travel projects and buying in a little extra support Richmond can provide supply cover funding for a range of activities such as:
- Initial development of your travel plan
- Monitoring of your travel plan
- Putting together your evidence portfolio for accreditation
- Running the campaigns and initiatives that are in your action plan
Funding is limited each year and to be eligible your school needs to have an approved STP in place. For more information and to apply for the funding contact your school travel advisor.
