That’s why we created
smartertravelrichmond.org – to help you find better ways to get around your area. That means quicker, easier and cheaper. It also means safer, more reliable and more comfortable. If we can make Richmond upon Thames’ air a little cleaner and our streets a little greener along the way, then all the better.
Who’s behind Smarter Travel Richmond upon Thames? Well it’s a partnership between Transport for London (TfL) and the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. We’ve joined forces to launch the three year, £4.2 million Smarter Travel initiative – one of the largest schemes of its kind anywhere in the world.
We're also seeking partnerships with commercial companies who share our objectives.

Richmond currently ranks 23rd out of the 33 boroughs for transport-related carbon dioxide emissions in the Capital, and 88 per cent of residents find traffic to be a problem in the borough. But the Council is aiming to become the greenest borough in London by 2012. And over the next three years, Smarter Travel initiatives will include:
- cycle training
- cycling facilities such as cycle routes and parking
- car club bays
- travel plans for workplaces and schools
- better information on sustainable transport options for residents and businesses
All of this should help save 23 tonnes of CO2 in the borough every day, as well as reducing congestion and improving local air quality.
